The 9 best Q&A tools for live streaming and broadcast in 2026 (OBS and vMix-ready)
Richard Frantzen, founder of AskTide · Updated
Most Q&A tools are built for a presenter and a projector. A live stream needs something else: a Q&A tool for live streaming that a producer can moderate and that drops into OBS, vMix or a hardware switcher as a clean graphic. Here are nine options, what each one is genuinely good at, and where it falls short on air.
Short answer: For a moderated Q&A overlay in OBS or vMix, AskTide (free during beta, transparent 1920×1080 browser source, no audience upvoting) and Q&A Events (transparent overlay on its €15-per-event Pro tier, with upvoting) are the closest fits. QuestionWall and H2R Graphics are good budget options, StreamYard and Restream show platform chat rather than curated questions, and Slido needs a chroma-key workaround.
What makes a good Q&A tool for live streaming
A presentation Q&A tool succeeds when the audience can see and vote on each other's questions on a projector. A broadcast Q&A tool succeeds when the producer can pick one question, clean it up, and put it on air as a graphic that matches the show. Those are different jobs, and most of the confusion in search results comes from mixing them up.
In a live production, the question graphic is just another layer in the switcher. That means it should arrive as a browser source with a transparent background, at the resolution of your program output, and it should change the instant the producer clicks. Anything that needs a green background, a cropped screenshot of a presenter view, or a manual copy-paste into a title template adds risk at exactly the moment you can least afford it.
If you want the setup walkthroughs rather than the tool comparison, start with how to show audience questions on screen in OBS or putting moderated questions on air in vMix.
How we compared
Every tool below was checked against its own documentation or pricing page in November 2026. Where a vendor page doesn't mention a feature, we say it is not described rather than claiming the tool can't do it.
- Switcher integration: does it give you a URL you can load as a browser source in OBS or the Web Browser input in vMix, or is it locked inside its own studio?
- Transparency: does the output render on a transparent background, or do you need chroma key?
- Moderation: can a producer review questions before anything reaches the screen?
- Audience upvoting: can viewers vote questions up? Useful in a conference room, a risk on a public stream.
- Audience access: can people ask without a platform account, for example by scanning a QR code in the room?
- Free plan: what you get without paying, according to the vendor.
- Swedish UI: whether the audience-facing page is available in Swedish, which matters for Nordic public-sector productions.
The best Q&A tools for live streams, ranked for broadcast use
1. AskTide
Best for: moderated questions as broadcast graphics in OBS, vMix and TriCaster · Free plan: free during beta, all features
AskTide is built around the broadcast workflow. Viewers open a link or scan a QR code, type a question (name optional) and need no app or account. Questions land in New, the producer or a moderator shortlists them into Selected, and one click puts a question On Air. The Display output is a 1920×1080 browser source with a transparent background that also carries polls, name tags and the QR code. A separate Flow grid output shows a scrolling wall of questions from one column, and a Live text output shows one full-screen message typed live. We put it first for this use case because it was designed for exactly this job, not because it does everything: there is deliberately no audience upvoting, so if you want the crowd to rank questions, pick another tool.
- Pro: transparent 1920×1080 outputs, no chroma key; updates reach the output within a fraction of a second
- Pro: password-protected moderator link that shows only the questions, so you can hand moderation to a colleague without exposing settings
- Pro: question layouts (card, lower third, ticker, minimal, full screen), 9 screen positions, themes and custom CSS
- Pro: audience page switches to Swedish automatically for Swedish browsers
- Pro: the audience link accepts questions any time, so you can collect them before the show, and the manage view exports all questions to Excel
- Con: no automatic profanity filter, so a human moderator is part of the workflow
- Con: no audience upvoting, by design
- Con: no YouTube or Twitch chat import; questions come from the audience page or are added by the operator
- Con: still in beta
2. Q&A Events (qna.events)
Best for: one-off streamed events that want upvoting plus an OBS overlay · Free plan: none (48-hour free trial of all features)
Q&A Events is the most direct functional match to AskTide, and in some ways it does more. It has audience upvoting, anonymous questions and moderation with up to five moderators. Its OBS guide describes a 1920×1080 browser source where the overlay defaults to a transparent background, with automatic or manual on-air modes. Pricing is per event rather than a subscription: Basic €5, Extended €10 (adds polls) and Pro €15 (stream overlays and branding), according to its site.
- Pro: transparent OBS browser source, documented step by step
- Pro: upvoting and multiple moderators for busy sessions
- Pro: EU-hosted, pay-per-event pricing with no subscription
- Con: the stream overlay needs the Pro tier
- Con: no free plan after the 48-hour trial
- Con: Swedish audience UI not stated
3. QuestionWall
Best for: small teams on a tight budget who also want lower thirds and a countdown · Free plan: 3 events per month
QuestionWall combines audience Q&A (with upvoting, moderation and anonymous questions) with polls, quizzes and a broadcast studio that offers an OBS browser source, lower thirds, a ticker, a countdown and a confidence monitor, according to its site. Paid plans are inexpensive: around $5 a month for 20 events or $10 a month for unlimited events on its pricing page. The pricing page doesn't say which plan includes the broadcast studio, and the site doesn't state whether the browser source is transparent, so test it in your switcher before show day.
- Pro: generous free plan and cheap paid tiers
- Pro: broadcast extras such as ticker, countdown and confidence monitor
- Con: transparency of the browser source not stated
- Con: language switcher lists EN, TR, FR, HR and ES, no Swedish
4. H2R Graphics
Best for: an all-round free graphics package where Q&A is one of many elements · Free plan: free forever; Pro $80 one-time
H2R Graphics is a desktop graphics app (macOS, Windows, Linux, Raspberry Pi) with lower thirds, tickers, timers, scores, QR codes and social chat. Its browser-based output is transparent and it lists OBS, vMix, ATEM, Wirecast and GoStream as supported. Version 3 advertises Audience Q&A: ask the audience open questions or polls and display responses as graphics. The site doesn't describe how the audience submits, whether answers are moderated or whether there is voting, so check the current docs if Q&A is your main need. Pro is a one-time $80 for two activations.
- Pro: broad graphics toolkit, free forever
- Pro: transparent browser output that works with many switchers
- Con: audience Q&A details (moderation, submission page) are not described on the site
- Con: runs as a desktop app you install and operate, rather than a hosted web app
5. Stagetimer
Best for: show callers who already run their timer in Stagetimer · Free plan: 3 audience questions
Stagetimer is a show-caller timer that can also take audience questions through a submit link or QR code, with anonymous submissions allowed. A moderator can show, edit or delete questions, and the shown question appears on the viewer and moderator screens. That is perfect for getting a question in front of a host or onto a stage monitor. Its documentation doesn't describe an OBS or vMix overlay for questions, so treat it as a stage tool first.
- Pro: timer, messages and questions in one tool the stage manager already uses
- Pro: QR code and submit link for in-room audiences
- Con: OBS or vMix use for questions not described
- Con: free plan limited to 3 audience questions; paid plans are annual ($210 and $420 a year on its pricing page)
6. StreamYard
Best for: putting YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitch or Facebook comments on screen inside StreamYard · Free plan: yes, but Chat Overlay needs a paid plan
StreamYard is a full browser studio, not a Q&A tool, but it is where many streamers first put viewer comments on screen. You can feature a comment manually, and its Chat Overlay automatically displays incoming comments from supported platforms in chronological order. Only comments from connected destinations appear, and Facebook Groups and Instagram are not supported. The help article says Chat Overlay is on all paid plans, while the pricing page first lists it on Core. StreamYard's own Q&A streaming guide describes a producer selecting a question and showing it on screen.
- Pro: zero extra tools if you already stream from StreamYard
- Pro: one-click featuring of a platform comment
- Con: questions only come from platform comments, so viewers need a platform account and the in-room audience is left out
- Con: the graphic lives inside StreamYard, not as a browser source for OBS or vMix
7. Restream
Best for: a running chat feed from several platforms in OBS · Free plan: yes (2 channels, Restream branding)
Restream's chat embed for OBS works as a browser source and can show all platforms, Twitch only or one specific event, with options for theme, alignment, opacity, size and auto-hide. It is a chat stream rather than a Q&A queue: the article doesn't describe picking individual messages to show, and it doesn't say which plans include the embed. Its pricing page lists a free plan plus paid plans from $19 a month.
- Pro: aggregates chat from many platforms into one browser source
- Pro: styling options including opacity and auto-hide
- Con: picking a single message to put on air is not described
- Con: viewers must comment on a streaming platform
8. vMix Social
Best for: vMix productions that want platform comments in native vMix titles · Free plan: included with vMix
vMix Social comes with vMix and sends Facebook, YouTube Live Chat and IRC data into vMix titles, so comments render with your own title templates. Its help doesn't mention a web form or another audience question source, which is why vMix users in forum threads such as vMix Social alternative fall back on Google Forms, Sheets or homemade tools for questions from people who aren't on those platforms.
- Pro: already in vMix, with native title rendering
- Pro: no browser source needed
- Con: vMix only
- Con: no audience question form described; platform comments only
9. Slido (with the community workaround)
Best for: teams already on Slido who stream occasionally · Free plan: yes (limits on Slido's pricing page)
Slido is excellent at meeting and conference Q&A: upvoting, moderation before questions are visible, anonymous questions and labels. For broadcast, it has no native transparent overlay that we could find. In September 2025 Slido Customer Care said there is no direct vMix integration and that live data export is manual. The workaround shared in the Slido community is to load the Present page as an OBS browser source, crop it and chroma-key the green background, which the poster said didn't match their brand.
- Pro: well-known name that many audiences have used before; free plan limits are on Slido's pricing page
- Pro: upvoting, moderation and 40 interface languages including Swedish
- Con: no native broadcast overlay described; chroma key and cropping needed
- Con: Slido's look, not your show's look

(checked November 2026) "Not described" means the vendor page we read doesn't mention the feature, not that the tool lacks it. Prices and plan limits change, so confirm on each vendor's pricing page before you buy.
Which Q&A overlay for OBS should you pick?
Upvoting is not automatically a feature on a public stream. On an open link, a coordinated group can push a question to the top. Upvoting works best in a room you trust; on air, an editor picking questions is usually safer.
- You run a produced show and an editor decides what goes on air: AskTide. The New, Selected, On Air, Done columns map onto how a producer already works, and the output is a transparent browser source.
- You want the audience to vote and you stream a handful of events a year: Q&A Events on the Pro tier, paid per event.
- You are on a shoestring and want a wall of extras: QuestionWall's free plan, after testing transparency in your switcher.
- You need lower thirds, scores and timers more than Q&A: H2R Graphics, and add a Q&A tool alongside it if needed.
- Your questions come from YouTube or Twitch chat and you stream from the browser: StreamYard's comment featuring or Chat Overlay.
- You want a live chat ticker from several platforms in OBS: Restream's chat embed.
- You are on vMix and only need platform comments: vMix Social.
- Your organization is standardized on Slido: keep it for the room, and test the Present-page workaround carefully, or run a broadcast tool next to it for the stream.
Audience Q&A for live production: a setup that works
Whichever tool you choose, the production pattern is the same. Test it in a rehearsal with the real switcher, not just in a browser tab.
- Create the session and share one link. Make one session per show. Put the audience link in the stream description and show a QR code for audience questions on screen and in the room, so in-room and online viewers end up in the same queue.
- Add the output as a browser source. In OBS, add a Browser source at 1920×1080 (see the OBS Studio guide). In vMix, use the Web Browser input, which supports transparent backgrounds and alpha according to the vMix help (see the vMix guide). For TriCaster, see the TriCaster guide.
- Split the roles. One person moderates and shortlists, one person (often the director) decides what goes on air. Give the moderator a link that only shows questions. Our guide on how to moderate a live Q&A covers the rules.
- Style it once, reuse it. Match fonts and colors to the show's lower thirds. A saved theme saves you restyling every graphic for every episode.
- Rehearse the handoff. Practice the moment the host reads the question and the graphic goes on. Decide who clears it and when.
Chat overlay or moderated Q&A?
Chat overlays and moderated Q&A tools solve different problems. A chat overlay shows the conversation as it happens, which builds energy on a gaming or creator stream. A moderated Q&A puts one considered question on screen, which suits interviews, town halls and council meetings. We compare the two in detail in chat overlay vs moderated Q&A, and if you are moving off Slido specifically, see Slido alternatives for live streaming.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Q&A tool for live streaming?
It depends on who picks the questions. For producer-curated questions as transparent graphics in OBS or vMix, AskTide and Q&A Events are the closest fits; for platform comments, StreamYard's Chat Overlay or Restream's chat embed are simpler.
Is there a free Q&A overlay for OBS?
Yes. AskTide is free during its beta with all features, QuestionWall has a free plan of 3 events a month, and H2R Graphics is free forever, though its Q&A details are not described on its site.
Can I show Slido questions in OBS?
Only with a workaround: Slido users load the Present page as a browser source, crop it and chroma-key the green background. Slido's support has said there is no direct vMix integration.
Which live Q&A tools let viewers upvote questions on stream?
Q&A Events, QuestionWall and Slido all have audience upvoting. AskTide deliberately does not; a producer or moderator chooses what goes on air.
Can viewers ask questions without a YouTube or Twitch account?
Yes, with a dedicated Q&A tool. Tools like AskTide, Q&A Events and QuestionWall use their own audience page, while StreamYard and Restream overlays only show comments from connected platforms.
Do I need chroma key to put questions on a stream?
Not if the tool outputs a transparent browser source. AskTide's outputs and Q&A Events' overlay are transparent by default; chroma key is mainly needed for tools without a broadcast output, such as the Slido workaround.
